Rated by The Face: a weekly playlist

Featuring Ariana Grande's surprise comeback track, a bonus treat from Yaeji and Pa Salieu's politically potent single B***k.

We’re in a crisis, but great music keeps coming out.

To keep up with it all, check out this playlist which we lovingly update every week. Read about last week’s additions here.

Ariana Grande – positions

On first listen, positions – lead track from the forthcoming album of the same name – feels relatively understated for a massive comeback single. But the genius is in the simplicity of that unforgettable hook. Roll on Friday.

Ty Dolla $ign – Lift Me Up ft. Young Thug & Future

A highlight from the Ty’s new album Featuring Ty Dolla $ign, here Thugger and Future glide alongside the buttery-voiced crooner on breezy, luxurious-sounding production. Sounds like there might be some cheeky panpipes tucked away in there, which is a nice touch.

Yaeji – When in Summer, I Forget about the Winter

This one was initially the bonus track for the CD version of Yaejis What We Drew 우리가 그려왔던 mixtape in Korea and Japan, and it’s so good that it needed to be shared with the rest of the world. In other Yaeji news, she’s dropped an interactive game called Woofa Joofa Juice Club.

Biig Piig – Liahr

After dabbling in drum n’ bass on her single Switch this year, Biig Piig’s reprised the rhythm for Liahr, one of her two new songs. This time it’s a much more subdued affair, with the beat underpinning half-whispered vocals that recall the warm crackle of Lana Del Rey’s folkier moments.

Pa Salieu – B***k

Following My Family (one of the best UK rap tracks of the year?), Pa Salieu continues his 2020 winning streak. The title being censored is to highlight how throughout history parts of society have portrayed Black people and culture almost like a swear word,” the Coventry rapper says of this hard-hitting tack. All proceeds go to Black Minds Matter.
