Filmed just three weeks before his death, you can watch it via TV One on 16th May.

Yesterday, TV One announced that they will air the late rapper’s final interview on 16th May, as part of their Uncensored series. Filmed just three weeks before his death on 9th April, it’s said to be his most transparent interview to date.

Earl Simmons, aka DMX, sold more than 74 million records worldwide, was nominated for three Grammy awards and became the first musician to have their first five albums debut at No.1 on the Billboard Charts, according to The New York Times.

A veritable hip-hop legend, DMX was one of the most lauded and best loved rappers of the 21st century. The outpouring of support on social media from fans and celebrities when his death was announced is testament to his enduring legacy. DMX passed away after being placed on life support, following a heart attack from a suspected drug overdose at just 50-years-old.

Set to be aired in two parts, TV One posted an exclusive preview of the interview in which the rapper can be heard expressing his gratitude for life. At the same time I was launching my career, I had no idea that we were also launching a movement,” he said. I’m going to look back on my life, just before I go, and thank God for every moment. It’s those moments, when they come together, that you see the beauty in who you are and why you are.”

This quote is emblematic of DMX’s wisdom and strength in the run up to his untimely passing. Last Thursday, founder of Urban One (America’s largest Black-owned media company) Cathy Hughes announced the interview via Twitter.

In a statement, she said: DMX sat down with our team and was completely UNCENSORED. We have one hour with the late rapper in his own words. For DMX to be with us just three weeks before God called him home, I believe it’s truly divine intervention […] I feel like this will be the biggest night in TV One history.”

Long live DMX.

DMX Uncensored will premiere on May 16th 8pm ET (1am BST)
