Rene Matić

Artist, Writer & Poet

Rene Matić is an artist, writer and poet based in London. Their work explores points of convergence between West Indian and white working-class cultures in Britain through queer readings of dance and music movements like Northern Soul and Ska. Bringing together themes of post-Blackness, glitch feminism and subcultural theory, Matić aims, through writing and other media, to interrupt and to exist in/between. Their recent book, flags for countries that don’t exist but bodies that do, is “a love letter” made up of photographs, taken by Matić between 2018 and 2021. Their work presents “a complicated relationship to Britishness” that’s both urgent and compelling.
