As the year drags on with little respite, perhaps we can take comfort in the revival of everybody’s favourite early-’00s music genre: pop-punk.
Contemporary artists like Olivia Rodrigo, Willow Smith and up and coming pop-punk acts like KennyHoopla have cherry picked its best bits – teenage angst, relatable, playful lyrics, banging melodies – and breathed new life into the genre, bringing with them classic fashion trends from the era.
But that’s not to say Gen‑Z has forgotten the OGs of the scene, who are experiencing a rebirth in their own right. Hayley Williams’ tracks have a knack for going viral on TikTok, while Travis Barker, outside of his new relationship with Kourtney Kardashian, has actively been giving a leg-up to fledgling pop-punk musicians like Jxdn.
Back when we were, er, young, screaming along to Misery Business after a Year 8 breakup, memorising all the lyrics to Fall Out Boy’s Thnks fr th Mmrs, and saving your coins for a knock-off Avril Lavigne Dickies shorts-vest-tie combo was pretty common practice. And so while we’re dusting off our trucker hats, let’s take a moment for the cult fashion trends making their way into 2021.
