Watch Going In, a candid documentary about the UK rap scene

The film follows four artists who’ve turned their troubles and dreams into art.

Going In explores the trauma, passion and aspiration in the stories of four UK rap artists. Filmed over the course of the last two years, the idea for the project started in 2017, after director Oliver Jennings and cinematographer Ed Hubert met hit-making producer Steel Bangelz while shooting for the video for Mist’s track Hot Property in Iceland. Intrigued by Bangelz’ story, Jennings, Hubert and photographer Frayser began building his trust, also spending time with artists such as Peckham rapper Tiny Boost, Manchester’s Tunde and Stoner – a London MC who has lost his sight.

Visually, Going In has a warm and grainy texture. It’s a style which the team have been developing since making 16mm-based videos like Avelino’s Energy and Unruly by Newham Generals. I wanted to create more of an atmosphere to reflect what I felt when I was immersed in this world and what I felt like the essence of rap was,” Jennings says of Going Ins aesthetic. “[I’m] following on from the traditions of people like Risky Roads, where everything is shot in a rough, but detailed way, and where you really become part of the rappers’ worlds.”
