Grand Theft Auto could produce its own in-game cryptocurrency
Rumours are swirling about a fictional “GTA bitcoin” that might be included in the next installment of the game. Stick ‘em up, rake in the virtual coins.
There’s no getting away from cryptocurrency, pal – even in imaginary worlds. Fasten your seatbelts and welcome a rumoured fictional bitcoin, which will apparently soon be making its way to video game franchise Grand Theft Auto, the ultimate way to lead a life of crime that won’t get you nicked (in real life).
And it’s about to get easier to swindle cops and please the Underworld. GTA 6 will feature an in-game cryptocurrency for payments, enabling players to accept crypto payments from virtual contractors who wish to remain anonymous.
The news comes from video game insider, Tom Henderson, who wrote on Twitter: “I heard recently that in GTA 6, some missions will reward you in bitcoin instead of cash […]. The stock market feature will return, with the addition of a broker for different cryptocurrencies. If GTA 6 incorporates this right, it’s huge for crypto.”
In the past, Henderson has successfully leaked accurate information about games such as Call of Duty and Battlefield, so it’s likely this is no tall tale. The crypto-payments, according to Henderson, will come from kingpin-type characters in the game who want to make untraceable payments (for drugs, hitmen…) fast.
According to Statista, GTA has shipped more than 345 million units worldwide since its initial 1997 release (remember the PC birds-eye view?). Now 16 games in, the inclusion of a fictional GTA bitcoin could help steer the public’s perception of cryptocurrency.
Don’t expect to get your hands on GTA 6 anytime soon, though. Its release date is still a mystery, but those in the know predict it won’t hit shelves until April 2023, at best. That should give you enough time to master the IRL crypto market before its release, right?
