Podcast: Is there anything good about The Idol?
This week, we discuss the backlash – as well as the merits – to Sam Levinson’s sleazy TV show.
Before it even aired, The Idol had stirred up controversy, partly thanks to a Rolling Stone expose which alleged that the show had “gone wildly, disgustingly off the rails” during production. Creator and director Sam Levinson’s response? “I think we’re about to have the biggest show of the summer.”
Since it finally arrived on our screens earlier this month, The Idol has mostly provoked outrage and ridicule. But is Levinson and The Weeknd’s series about “the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood” – really as terrible as its critics say it is?
For this week’s episode of THE FACE Podcast, our Editor and host Matthew Whitehouse is joined by our Features Editor Olive Pometsey and culture journalist Shaad D’Souza to discuss what went wrong with The Idol and which actors’ performances deserve some credit.
