Luna Carmoon directs a Ewan Mitchell-starring video for Fontaines D.C.

New single In the Modern World sees Fontaines frontman Grian Chatten wrestle with feelings of emotional disconnect and alienation from his surroundings. Relatable!

As Irish five piece band Fontaines D.C. continue to veer from post-punk to more pop-adjacent stylings – with the odd nu-metal, trip-hop flourish thrown in – they’ve also renewed their collaboration with director Luna Carmoon, whose video for band’s previous single Here’s the Thing saw a bullied young woman conjures up a friendlier, stranger world in her mind.

Best known for her 2023 feature film Hoard, Luna is an expert at depicting those who live on the fringes of society. In the video for In the Modern World, she enlists FACE friend and House of the Dragon star Ewan Mitchell to play a chain smoking recluse who only emerges from the confines of his bedroom to engage in, er, carjitsu. That is, jujitsu that you play while sitting in your car – an actual combat sport that’s taken off across the US. Listen, just watch and listen for yourself, yeah?

Fontaines’ fourth album, Romance, is out on Friday.
