Two Shell – Everybody Worldwide
Everyone’s favourite mischievous dance duo have announced their self-titled debut album, which due for release via Young on 25th October. You can raise a glass to that with Two Shell (or some hired actors) at upcoming parties in London, New York, Tokyo, and one as yet undisclosed location. On the lead single, which mutates elements of UKG and trance, the slogan “everybody worldwide” is blurted out by a cast of pitch-shifting robotic voices. Let’s go. JW
SOPHIE – Live My Truth ft. BC Kingdom & LIZ
SOPHIE’s catalogue fluctuates between intense experimentalism and instantly pleasurable pop melody. On her posthumous, self-titled album, Live My Truth is one of the tracks that leans into the latter. Featuring LA duo BC Kingdom and electro-pop artist LIZ, the track is slick, shiny and sensual – as if to soundtrack a moonlit party that’s so beautiful it could only exist in your dreams. DR
Jade – Midnight Cowboy
Jade Thirlwall’s second release as a solo artist underscores her commitment to the club, following the head spinning mania of her genre-blending debut Angel of my Dreams. Here, though, the vibe is more late-night house-adjacent than the glimmers of eurodance on Angel, a sultry, bass-heavy banger that’s poised to soundtrack vogue battles. It’s a star-studded production, too, written with Raye and featuring an introduction by Ncuti Gatwa. As for the lyrics, there’s naughty cowboy puns aplenty. As Jade sings, there’s “Nothin’ wrong with a little horseplay”. OP
Beckah Amani – Superstar
“Shoot for my heart /I got issues that are fighting for your stars,” sings Burundian-Australian artist Beckah Amani on her latest single. It’s a neat conceit for a song, one that ties its title Superstar into the overarching theme of learning to trust a new romantic partner. But it’s the Afrobeat rhythms and occasional gentle flickers of amapiano that really make this song stand out. A product of Beckah’s childhood spent moving around the globe, Superstar makes melding varied cultural influences sound easy. OP
Mustafa – What Happened, Mohammed?
THE FACE’s cover star’s debut album Dunya is a powerful body of work, one that pairs emotive storytelling and poignant poetry with a warm, tender folk sound. What Happened, Mohammed? Is a highlight. In his cover story, Hanif Abdurraqib wrote that “it’s the song that most fits and shines a light on what seems like the mission statement of Dunya: population. A generous populating of each song, overflowing not only with people, landmarks or geography, but also a broad population of emotion, from verse to verse, or sometimes line to line, the leaps largely seamless, as they might be in your own head.” DR
Ekkstacy – Mr Mole
Vancouver musician Ekkstacy is a streaming sensation who made a name for himself with his 2021 hit I Walk This Earth All by Myself and a stint supporting Blink-182. This scuzzy alt-rock banger is about burying your head in the sand when faced with the harsh realities of life. We can relate. JW
