A big week for live music probably also means one thing: a big week for great looks. Oklou, Erika de Casier, Malibu and Nick León all performed at the Roundhouse in Camden as part of Pitchfork festival. Over in Dalston, Mechatok’s clubnight, Natural Mind, linked up with Kiko Kostadinov to put on a proper party with performances from The Femcels and Oli XL, among others. Then there were Blood Orange’s four (!) dates at Ally Pally, followed by the excellent, experimental Jane Remover’s show at Koko. Had time to catch your breath yet? Here’s the best in beauty over those four nights.
Sonny Kills, 19 - Oklou
“I got my hair done at a salon in Hackney. I made this hat myself – it’s Mongolian goat fur”
Gabby Turton, 23 - Kiko Kostadinov x Natural Mind
“I’ve got craft shop bird feathers in my hair to make it look longer – I was thinking about a Nina Ricci show from 2007. I’m wearing Fenty lip gloss, a ladybird sticker on my chest, and a contact lens that looks like a 4chan logo”
Otto, 22 - Kiko Kostadinov x Natural Mind
“I used to have curly hair, then I got a Japanese perm and grew it out. Now, I just wash it and dry it – no blow dry, no straighteners. I think my hair helps me embody the person I actually am. Good hair can make or break you”
Jacko, 29 - Kiko Kostadinov x Natural Mind
“My neck tattoos are kind of like a weird little collection of things in a cabinet. It doesn’t matter how many you get, you always want more”
Emmanuel Shogbolu, ageless - Kiko Kostadinov x Natural Mind
“I used to have locs for about ten years, then I cut them off and left one in the back. I guess the look is kind of African, but also punk. It’s about metamorphosis and embodying that transformation, like a scorpion”
Maddie, 19 - Oklou
“I did this look in 10 minutes because I looked at the time and was like, fuck. But I really love doing silver make-up. Oklou has very silver vibes. I dyed my hair black the other day, but I’m actually ginger. That’s me”
Qiulin, 21 - Oklou
“My hair is originally dark, but I’ve dyed it. I’m also wearing wearing contacts today!”
Char, 30 - Oklou
“My inspiration for this look is like, fairy-in-an-urban-environment-core. I want to be a little woodland gremlin but I’m forced to live this capitalist lifestyle”
Kista, 25 - Oklou
“I wanted my make-up to match Oklou’s music. It’s very ethereal so I went for white eyeliner in a kind of spiral shape, just something that looks a bit different”
Willow, 29 - Oklou
“With my hair, I guess I was going for a vibrant, sort of moonlight, atmospheric vibe. For the make-up, I’m inspired by Japanese fashion – the under-eye red makeup is called Igari style, and it’s used to accentuate the area like you’ve been a little bit drunk or crying. I’m not gonna lie, I kind of just threw this together today”
Jamie Stewart, 22
“I’m wearing a little brown eyeliner mixed with black, some mascara, and a touch of shimmer that looks almost like residue from the night before. I never go for a heavy look – I like it to feel lived-in and natural. I’m also wearing my favourite jacket, which I found at a thrift shop in New York. I put it on tonight because I thought it was super Oklou”
Madeline Kaplan-Holland, 26 - Kiko Kostadinov x Natural Mind
“Nails are the only thing I really commit to. If my nails are done, I could have greasy hair, no make-up, not even showered, and still feel like I can talk to anyone. Nails come first, always. Hair’s last – I don’t give a fuck. It can be greasy, tied up, whatever. Make- up’s simple: three products, expensive but curated: eyeliner, mascara, lip liner. Done. And then we just live”
Melody, 19 - Jane Remover
“My main beauty ritual is definitely eyeliner – the spikes, the curves, how it flows”
Beatrice, 24 - Jane Remover
“This is my everyday look. I start with primer, then put on a sheer, shimmery silver eyeshadow on my upper and lower eyelids. I use concealer as foundation, add some contour, eyeliner with a soft brown lip liner, and a shimmery blush”
Alexander, 18 - Jane Remover
“I just use shampoo and conditioner, and I’ve started a three-layer skincare routine recently. I usually wear make-up, but not today”
Joe, 20 - Jane Remover
“I was in Berlin this morning. I got back about eight hours ago and got an eye infection there from wearing some shitty make-up. I look fried, but I’m completely sober. My friend had some glitter on the train and put it on my eyes”
Kirsty, 25 - Jane Remover
“My hair’s pink and I’m cute as fuck out here, vibing”
Esra, 17 - Jane Remover
“The one thing I can’t live without is my contacts. I don’t really do skincare, I just do my make-up and that’s it”
Jagoda, 19 - Blood Orange
“Honestly, I’m inspired by myself. I’m from Poland, and alternative culture isn’t that common there, so I think it’s cool to stand out a bit. I’m also really inspired by punk”
Maddison - Blood Orange
“I like to use make-up to translate a part of myself. I took inspiration from glitter and gems – it looks really fun and ethereal”
Widad, 27 - Blood Orange
“My hair has been my signature look for the past two years – I mostly do it for festivals and parties. The outfit was very last minute, but it subconsciously matched the kid on the Blood Orange album cover”
Teddy, 26 - Blood Orange
“My hair was done by my twin sister. As for my skin Cetaphil face wash and Epimax moisturiser, that’s it”
Shahriyar, 19
“I just wash my hair with shampoo and conditioner, and I use this JVN hair cream – it makes my hair super fluffy. I put it on while my hair is wet, and after the shower it works a dream”
