You know that girl who’s all over your feed, the one whose outfits you’ve saved to your Pinterest boards and hairstyles you’ve copied for nights out? She’s only gone and dropped an album.
Turns out that being an online It Girl is just a hobby for Savannah Hudson. Music, however, has been in her life for well over a decade – in 2013, with her brother Brandon, she even made it to the quarter finals of America’s Got Talent. Fast-forward 10 years, and the duo have released their first full-length project as Between Friends.
“It feels like this precious thing that was my best kept secret is now open for the world to see,” says Savannah of I Love My Girl, She’s My Boy, which packs 14 alt pop gems into little over 32 minutes. “To me, the album feels like one big long therapy session, with hues of ’90s pop culture nostalgia and lasers.”
But the 24-year-old’s idiosyncratic style still played an essential role in the songwriting process. “All of my personal wardrobe was heavily used as part of this album, from what I wore when writing the songs to wearing my favourite pieces for music videos and shoots. I feel like I can’t look at my closet now without thinking about how each piece is linked to the songs we wrote.”
That same sonic/style synergy applies to Sav’s approach to beauty, too. “I think being a girl involves constantly moving through phases of exploration and trying things,” she explains. “For me, it’s kind of project-based. When we made [2022’s nine-track EP] CUTiE, I wanted to do fun, extravagant looks. But this new album feels really natural and raw to me, and that’s been the direction that feels most comfortable recently.”
Enter stage left: enviably glossy skin, with a flick of eyeliner or a strong lip. Make no mistake, Sav’s still ready to take risks with her performance outfits. But when it comes to her glam, she’s been leaning towards a more natural look, sometimes wearing “little to no makeup”.
We know what you’re thinking: drop the skincare routine, Savannah! And we’re way ahead of you.
The first thing I eat and drink when I wake up is…
Coffee, coffee, coffee and I know it’s bad. I should have water or bone broth or something but… just coffee and maybe something sweet to eat.
My morning skincare regime looks like…
I’m a simple girl. I wake up, immediately splash cold water, moisturise, apply sunscreen and eat breakfast.
The soundtrack to my morning routine is…
Currently I Love You, Ono by Stereo Total.
My go-to beauty hack for when I’ve pulled an all-nighter is…
Soooo much moisturiser and water. And if I really need to pull it together, ice on the face.
The product I’ll reach for when I’ve got a pimple is…
I’m so happy you asked… My little sisters have shown me the majority of my favourite skincare products, and they introduced me to so much of the La Roche-Posay stuff. For pimples, I’ll put on the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo Acne Spot Treatment.
My favourite brand of sunscreen is…
EltaMD UV Elements Tinted Sunscreen Moisturiser, SPF 44.
My holy grail skincare product is…
Weleda Skin Food Original Ultra-Rich cream!!!!!!!
Because…
It makes you feel like a newborn baby.
My best kept beauty secret is…
Less is more. Embrace being natural and play up your favourite features.
My favourite feature is my…
Freckles and beauty marks.
Because…
I’ve had them basically since birth and they remind me of being a little girl.
My first beauty-related memory is…
Shaving my eyebrows off at seven years old because I had a unibrow and got made fun of at school. The following year of growing them out was quite memorable…
The last life-changing product I discovered was…
Bio Oil! The most amazing and moisturising oil for everything. It’s a big tour hack for looking super glossy on stage, too.
The best tactic for getting rid of stubborn waterproof mascara is…
Ugh… crying.
I keep my lips moisturised with…
Rhode and Baby Lips – forever.
The bougiest beauty product I own is…
To be honest, I’m really a simple girl. I find happiness in drugstore products and having a simple routine. I haven’t tapped into being a fancy skincare mom yet, but I’m looking forward to those days. But I also wanna say: it’s OK to have a simple, easy routine with simple, easy products that work for you. Being bougie isn’t always the answer. But I did treat myself recently to some Isamaya products – I can’t choose between them because they’re all art.
The face mask that never lets me down is…
The Aztec clay mask.
My signature scent is…
Vanilla oil.
TikTok made me buy it…
I’m surprisingly sceptical of these things, but I did buy the heated hairbrush thingy and it wasn’t bad. Very fun.
My top tips for having a good hair day are…
It’s either air-dried and messy, or perfectly straight. It depends on how crazy I sleep or wake up looking, and we go from there. But I’ll use Moroccan Oil forever.
A hair product I can’t go without is…
Ouai’s wave spray. Smells delicious.
My evening skincare routine looks like…
I’m very new to taking care of my skin properly. I figured I should start, so I have a light night routine. I wash my face, then I add B5 serum and Vitamin C serum. I let that sink in, and then apply tonnes of Skin Food moisturiser to lock it in for the evening.
The very last product I apply before going to sleep is…
Lotion all over my face and body.
The secret to a good night’s kip is…
A glass of wine and cute panties. You sleep better when you feel cute.
