In 2021, walking down the street in Soho I found a 1984 copy of the feminist magazine Heresies. It was in a box of books belonging to the artist Mary Beth Edelson who had recently died. The issue– focused entirely on women directing, writing and performing– struck me as a time capsule of protest and demonstration. Many of the artists I hadn’t heard of. Some, like Meredith Monk, are legends. I collaged these pages into Amelia’s story as so many of the words seemed applicable to her position; of being a body in a world of images rarely accompanied by words. Amelia and I made these performances together. It is her work and mine.
