A giant race helmet has docked in London

To see in the Formula One weekend, Coinbase and Aston Martin Aramco Formula One have given Londoners a very big surprise.

It’s not every day you see a 10-foot helmet in central London, but then again, F1 weekend is approaching.

To kick off the British Grand Prix, Coinbase and Aston Martin’s Aramco Formula One team have come together for a mega new project. Together, they’ve created a giant, electric-blue helmet, which toured the capital by crane truck on 1st July before landing in Covent Garden. In a world overflowing with hyper-real content made using AI, we wanted to do the opposite: create something that looked fake, even though it’s very real,” says Esteban Cardona Jiménez, creative director at Coinbase.

F1 fans can take snaps beside it and explore an installation of merch, including limited-edition long-sleeves, racing caps, jumpsuits, patches, enamel pins and more.

This year, the Grand Prix returns to Silverstone village in Northampton, where the first Formula One World Championship round took place on 13th May 1950. It’s also the home of the Aston Martin team, which features experienced Canadian driver Lance Stroll and Spanish legend Fernando Alonso. At 26, Lance has been driving for almost 10 years, making a record-breaking debut in 2017 in Baku, Azerbaijan, where he became the youngest newcomer to make the podium. As for 43-year-old Fernando, he lays claim to over 400 Grand Prix starts.

In the all-female F1 Academy championship, the team in green will be represented by 18-year-old Swiss driver Tina Hausmann, who won the women’s trophy in both the Italian F4 and Euro 4 in 2023.

F1 fanatics will be glued to their screens this weekend, but in the meantime, they know where to go.

The 10-foot helmet is available to view on 3rd July from 11am to 7pm in Covent Garden’s piazza
