There’s much music out there and sometimes it’s hard to keep up.
Rather than letting the algorithm dictate your music taste, you can listen to Rated by THE FACE – a playlist that’s updated by our (human) editorial team every week.
Tyler, the Creator – Noid
Back in August, Tyler ruffled some feathers on the Mavericks podcast by bemoaning the new generation of artists, who allegedly prioritise memes over musicianship. Noid, the lead single from Chromakopia – Tyler’s first album in three years – certainly shows off his knack for cool details, with a sample of ‘70s Zambian rock band Ngozi Family that’s bass-boosted by Thundercat and a chorus of backing singers that includes Willow Smith. In the intense monochrome video, Tyler is stalked by crazed fans including a gun-wielding Ayo Edebri. It’s good to have him back, isn’t it? DR
Heavy Lungs – Get Out
Feeling stressed at the moment? Same here, mate. Bristol rascals Heavy Lungs have got just the song for this. Get Out is a pulverising punk smash about the “urgent desire to escape the multitude of knee breaking pressures of life”, but it’s somehow really fun and catchy as hell. They have a handsome singer too. DR
Tara Lily – Like The Ocean ft. Surya Sen
Flying the flag for the British-Bengali community, Like The Ocean brings together Tara Lily’s jazz sensibilities and Surya Sen’s brand of dreamy electronica. It’s a combination that pays off: from sampled sounds of water to twinkling sound effects, there’s something really sensual and intimate about the production of this track, which is complemented by Bengali song verses. RenzNiro & Space Afrika – Sixteen
One rule for picking tracks for Rated by THE FACE is that they need to have dropped within the last week or so. But we’re going to bend that rule for Manchester experimentalists RenzNiro and Space Afrika because we like them a lot and because this beauty of a tune, which dropped in the summer, has a cool new music video. Over a surreal soundscape weaved with reversed cymbals and warm but ghostly voices, Renz raps with a pure and open heart: “I always assume that everything that is meant for me will reach /and whatever will be, will be.“ DR
Addison Rae – Aquamarine
There are many strings to Addison Rae’s bow. Once dismissed as a TikTok export with little to offer aside from viral dances, she’s now proven herself to be quite the aspirational personality, one who’s a) consistently serving great looks b) hanging out with all the right people and c) releasing music that’s actually good – see all the praise around her last single, Diet Pepsi. Aquamarine is irresistibly charming and there are, dare I say it, vocal echoes of Madonna. Also alluring is Addison’s commitment to on point visuals: she enlisted Petra Collins, Mel Ottenberg, Sean Price Williams and Pat McGrath to help make the video. JW
