AJ Tracey and Jorja Smith try out rhythm’n’grime for their lovestruck single Crush

Also on the Rated by THE FACE playlist: Skaiwater, DJ Heartstring, Sabrina Carpenter and Dolly Parton.
There’s loads of music out there, and sometimes it’s hard to keep up.
Rather than letting the algorithm dictate your music taste, you can listen to Rated by THE FACE – a playlist that’s lovingly curated and updated by our (human) editorial team every week.
AJ Tracey – Crush ft. Jorja Smith
Back in 2015, Corteiz boss Clint posted a video on Twitter of his “mate Jorja” singing over the classic grime instrumental Ghetto Kyote. As their fame has surged over the years, the clip has occasionally resurfaced, inspiring plenty of comments about how good she sounds on grime. Now, we’ve officially got Jorja Smith guesting on a rhythm’n’grime track, spitting bars alongside AJ Tracey, as well as singing. On Crush, which dropped just in time for Valentine’s Day, the duo play heartsick lovers over a sample of Wretch 32’s 2006 tune Used to Be, which itself features a sample of Love Wouldn’t Count Me Out by Brandy. It’s like a Russian Doll of ‘00s nostalgia. DR
Addison Rae – High Fashion
Addison’s been slowly winning over the hearts of her music critics and now, she’s coming for the fashion girlies. Singing over a sultry beat, she tells the listener “I don’t need your drugs, I’d rather get high fashion” which is a commendable position, although we know of one or two in the industry who’d prefer both. In classic Addison fashion, the accompanying video shows her writhing around seductively – last time, it was on the back of a van for the Aquamarine video, this time it’s in a room of powdered sugar and a walk-in wardrobe. DJ Heartstring – Emotion Overload
The Berlin duo and self-professed “clubland cupids” just drooped a new EP, and Emotion Overload is the trance-fuelled opener. They made the tune while on a countryside retreat, though it’s clear they were fantasising about sending it on the dancefloor. Brimming with bittersweet rave euphoria, this is a great one to start any night out with. JW
Skaiwater – You Don’t Feel The Same
Skaiwater is known to throw bits of emo, baile funk, ambient, trap and Jersey club into a blender and spice up their genre soups with blown-out bass. Unless I’m mistaken, this is the first time they’ve sprinkled in some ‘80s new wave and cheeseball Van Halen guitar licks. As always, it works. You can find more wonderfully weird experiments like this on the LA-via-Nottingham artist’s new album #mia. DR
Sabrina Carpenter – Please Please Please feat. Dolly Parton
Brat fans had Girl, so confusing featuring Lorde; Short n’ Sweet fans can now rejoice as Sabrina Carpenter brings her own heavyweight remix to the table. Dolly Parton provides extra country twang on one of Sabrina’s biggest hits, also adding another layer of pleading desperation to Please Please Please. This is the woman who sang Jolene, mind you – so she knows her way around bemoaning a loser through song. JW
