February’s just around the corner, which means it’s only 25 days until Central Cee’s highly-anticipated second mixtape, 23. Over the last couple of months, the West London rapper has been drip-feeding singles to fans so they can get a taste of what to expect – first the viral, PinkPantheress-sampled track Obsessed With You, followed by playful banger Retail Therapy.
On Friday, Cench released the poignant Cold Shoulder alongside a moody, black and white video which sees him hanging out with friends in both his home borough of Shepherd’s Bush, West London and Los Angeles, tour diary style. “I sin for the sake of progress /I got a big heart when it comes to my family /But in the streets my heart is the coldest,” Cench raps over a lo-fi drill beat, doubling down on his lyrical ability and knack for storytelling.
Cold Shoulder is an honest, intimate take on grappling with fame and money versus personal fulfilment, the sense of duty that comes with providing for your family, and the strange shift in the way people treat you after you’ve made it big. Remixing TikTok tunes, nailing emotional tracks… Central Cee’s as versatile as they come. And he’s only 23.
Sounds like a good idea for a mixtape.
23 is out on 25th February
