EsDeeKid continues his hot streak with Century

Also on Rated by The Face: Swank Mami, Tyler, the Creator, Horse Vision and Chy Cartier & Lil Yachty.

There’s loads of music out there, and sometimes it’s hard to keep up.

Rather than letting the algorithm dictate your music taste, you can listen to Rated by THE FACE – a playlist that’s lovingly curated and updated by our (human) editorial team every week.

EsDeeKid – Century

When was the last time you saw a rapper dressed like a knight? On his intensely-hyped Rebel tour – which includes sold-out shows everywhere from London to Lithuania – EsDeeKid has been rocking armoured gloves and a cloak-like hoodie, and this 15th century swag might explain the harpsichord buried in the beat for Century. This is the first track EsDee’s dropped since his instant-classic Rebel mixtape, and as he tears through soured horns with his sharp scouse accent, you hear the confidence of an uncompromising breakout star who’s now got five million monthly Spotify listeners (“I’m the same kid with the same friends/posted up in the same ends,” he insists.) He’s on legendary run right now. As one YouTuber succinctly puts it: We’re gonna be nostalgic for this era.” DR

Chy Cartier & Lil Yachty – Here We Go Again

Sonically, Chy Cartier and Lil Yachty are chalk and cheese, but this collab has actually been on the cards for a while. Chy’s fans might remember the North London rapper posting pics with Yachty back in May, or that they were hanging out at the last New York Fashion Week. With horror movie synths and gargled bass, the menacingly weird track Here We Go Again – taken from their collaborative double single 2 Easy – felt like an appropriate drop for Halloween. DR

Tyler, the Creator – Mother

Limited vinyl pressings of Tyler’s 2024 album Chromakopia contained Mother and now, it’s been included on the deluxe edition. Writing on Instagram, Tyler explained that it was the first song he wrote for the album and that it’s the grounding piece”, but that he took it off last minute (he’s still not sure why). Dedicated to – you guessed it – his mum, the song tells the story of his upbringing and the challenges she faced as a result of disappointing men. Still, she managed to support him and nurture his talent. Me and her, we ain’t need a man/College courses with me in her hand/I was raised in a house full of love/I was raised on that type of time,” Tyler raps over gentle keys. It might just bring a tear to your eye. TL

Swank Mami – MC69

On her new EP Worldstar, Swank Mami fuses featherlight R&B, hip-swaying club rhythms and futuristic hyperpop gloss. On MC69 – which is about being secure in who you are” and being confident in telling people no’ – the Oslo-based artists does what she does best: gracefully implanting a catchy melody in your mind. Horse Vision – Watching Over Me

I became aware of Swedish duo Horse Vision at a Scenic Route night held at South London venue Spanners. Since then, they’ve released a great debut album, Another Life, which combined pop and indie-rock with poignant melodies and cosmic production. Watching Over Me is very much a continuation of this vibe – a little bit shoegaze, a little bit electronic, it’s a perfect tune to hunker down to. Its lyrics capture a kind of dreamy haze: Frosted /Nailgun /Some other stance than me /I can’t get enough /Morning /Sunset /Some of the days are longer”. Anyone fancy a cuppa? JW
