Jockstrap’s recent EP Wicked City kicks off with distorted vocals and intense drums, bringing to mind the more abrasive side of Arca and SOPHIE’s music. Then, the EP gives way to warm and elegant songs which are warped in quietly unsettling ways.
The duo’s sound is weird blend, the result of Georgia Ellory and Taylor Skye’s classical training, their love of club music and the influence of the curiously-minded musicians in their circle.
Listen to their charming, eclectic Face Mix and read a Q&A with Skye below.
What’s the vibe and direction of your Face Mix?
Georgia picked loads of bangers and I chose loads of songs from our best friends. We don’t ever plan our mixes, we just stick two vibes next each other and see what happens.
How has lockdown affected your relationship with music, if at all?
We’ve seen more of each other. And I’ve got closer with certain notes. Georgia misses playing live. So do I. I miss wearing ear plugs. And I miss getting the bus. We miss pre-drinks. We miss IDs. We miss bouncers. We miss drinks.
Who are the contemporary UK musicians who are inspiring you at the moment?
Georgia is quarantined with loads of inspiring musicians. I’m locked down with Bob Dylan’s new album. Also our friends inspire us: Hogarth, Ethan P Flynn, Mute Body, Simeon, Elsa, black midi and many others.
What’s your dream night out when this is all over?
We are going to go on a night out to fabric, Corsica, Ministry of Sound, XOYO, Bussey Building, Superstore, Glove That Fits, Windmill, Old Blue Last, Fold, O2 Arena, o2 Brixton, o2 Sheperds Bush, o2 Kentish Town, Heaven, Egg and then finish at our student union. We are going to do it sober and individually. No one is welcome to join.
