Lisa – New Woman ft. Rosalía
Auramaxxing is the name of the game on Lisa’s latest solo effort, enlisting Rosalía to help bump up those all-important points. Released just a week after Blackpink celebrated their eighth anniversary, New Woman is, as you might expect, all about reinvention. “Pain has come and gone again /Walked through that fire /I rediscover,” sings the K‑pop juggernaut over throbbing synths and taut drums, facilitated by the track’s mega-hit producers Max Martin and Ilya. Then, midway through, the song reinvents itself, slowing down the tempo and switching to a moodier vibe for Rosalía’s self-affirmed verse, which includes lines such as, “Solo sé servir”. Translation: “I only know how to serve”. Sounds about right. OP
Cash Cobain – Problem
Cash Cobain, arguably one of the hottest producers in rap right now, went viral with a snippet of his “sexy-drill” remix of Not My Problem – another viral track by the singer Laila (who also happens to be the daughter of Mos Def). Cash sent out the beat to a bunch of rappers, and suddenly Problem was everywhere. Capitalising on the hype, there are 15(!) artists on the official version – ranging from elder rappers alike Big Sean and Fabolous, to R&B crooner 6lack, Michigan scene stalwart YN Jay and a typically horny verse from Cash himself. It’s too long, of course, but you have to admire the flex. DR
Babyfather – Bluey Vuitton (proud. Evilgiane)
The influence of New York producer Evilgiane and his Surf Gang collective is spreading. Following last year’s John Glacier x Surf Gang EP, Giane has tapped into the UK underground once again, providing an ethereal beat for Dean Blunt’s Babyfather project. Following a verse from DJ Escrow (aka James Massiah), we get a few bars from Blunt, who shares a brief glimpse into a druggy romance. DR
Sega Bodega & Eartheater – Fade Into You
Ever wondered what Mazzy Star would sound like underwater? Wonder no more. Sega Bodega and Eartheater have dusted off their acappella cover of the alt-rock band’s broody ‘94 classic that they recorded back in 2020. Struggling to sleep? Stick this one on your insomnia playlist. DR
Nilüfer Yanya – Mutations
In the streaming era, when over 12,0000 songs appear online every day and the artists usually get paid very little for them, you wonder if some of them are created with the expectation that people will only hear them once. This system doesn’t encourage artists to spend time chiselling away at the details, which is one of the reasons why Nilüfer Yanya’s meticulously crafted music feels special. Mutations, the fourth song to be shared from her next album My Method Actor, weaves an intricate web with guitars, hi-hats, strings and Nilüfer’s smoky vocal tone. Put it on your headphones on and listen closely. DR
