There’s loads of music out there, and sometimes it’s hard to keep up.
Rather than letting the algorithm dictate your music taste, you can listen to Rated by THE FACE – a playlist that’s lovingly curated and updated by our (human) editorial team every week.
Pearly Drops – End Credits
Do you ever walk around with music in your headphones and feel like you’re in a film? The stylish Helsinki duo Pearly Drops have penned a song for those exact moments. “Would you roll the credits, babe? /Let it fade to black,” they sing on End Credits, over a driving beat and smooth synths. Put your sunglasses on, light a cigarette. This is your big moment. DR
Silver Gore – Dogs in Heaven
Opening with a triumphant, sparkling crash, Dogs in Heaven is the debut single from Silver Gore, the duo made up of renowned songwriter Ethan P. Flynn and regular collaborator Ava Gore, who have been signed by Island Records. Blending twee folk sonics with dark imagery and the faint sound of howling dogs, the song focusses on the loss of innocence, inspired by Ava’s childhood viewings of the tragic animated kids film All Dogs Go to Heaven. Reflecting on the track, Ava says, “This song is about making decisions and the unexpected consequences that come from them.” TL
Wednesday – Pick Up That Knife
Karly Hartzman is having a rough day. On Pick Up That Knife, Wednesday’s frontwoman sings wistfully about cracking her tooth, parking too close to someone to get out of her car and throwing up in the pit at a Death Grips show, before a crescendo of crushing guitars supercharge to the song’s sense of frustration. Let’s hope the five-piece band (which counts indie wunderkind MJ Lenderman on guitar) have found some moments of peace for their upcoming album, Bleeds, which drops 19th September. JW
James K – Doom Bikini
I was trying to think of ways to describe Doom Bikini, but James K’s Instagram post about it is so good that I might as well defer. “One of those Thursdays, tfw — laying down thinking with your girls with an almost sticky openness, like bubble gum pulled slowly between your fingers,” the New York musician writes about this “sun-greased slinky ballad”, which features a “sugar-dusted g‑funk” synth that could have been dug out from the Death Row records vault. You’ll find more late summer anthems like this on James K’s forthcoming album Friend, which will be released 5th September via AD 93. If you like what you’re hearing, you could even treat yourself to a Friend beach towel. DR
Mr. Beale – Gilded
There’s a lot that ends up in our inboxes but this one piqued my interest. Gilded is a smoky, trip-hop infused track which blends field recordings and epic Nilüfer Yanya-esque soundscapes with hazy, jazz vocals. London-based artist Eleanor Beale, aka Mr Beale, created the song in the snowy terrain of Lapland, where she did a lot of trekking. “Time moved slower in these spaces and it shone a light on the insane fast paced living that cityscapes endure,” she says, “Gilded reflects that intense rhythm.” TL
