HiTech – SPANK! ft. GDMRW

This year HiTech have been busy tearing up live shows across the world (including THE FACE’s New Noise event for their London debut), giving underground dance music much-needed doses of humour and chaos. SPANK! is more ammo for the proudly horny Detroit trio’s wild live show. With a hard-hitting beat, bursts of cloudy synths and pummelling percussion, on SPANK! it sounds as though HiTech are experimenting with ghettotech to make it sound fresh, but they’re not neglecting their duty to pack out the dancefloor. Tommy Richman – Whitney

The latest taste of what’s to come on his debut album Coyote (dropping next week), Tommy picks up the pace on Whitney, merging syncopated synths with retro falsetto ad-libs for a bittersweet take on unrequited love. You’re always in my dreams, but it’s a one-way street,” sings the Virginian artist, pining at the peak of his vocal range. Paired with the odd funky bassline and a sprinkle of 80s-style keys, it takes Tommy’s sonic universe into groovier territories, all while staying true to the sound that made Million Dollar Baby such a runaway smash. Ruthven — Itch

This latest single from Ruthven – an ex-firefighter and founding member of the prolific Paul Institute collective/record label – features carefully deployed synths and adroit, layered vocals. There are definitely echoes of Jai Paul on the track – understandable, given Itch was written, performed and produced by his brother and collaborator A.K. – but Ruthven has his own distinctive vocals flourishes. The South Londoner will drop his debut album Rough & Ready on 25th October. JW

Chy Cartier – YO!

Chy Cartier is making a name for herself with distinctive flows. On YO! the North Londoner climbs through a cluttered beat like it’s an obstacle course, pulling off agile rhymes along the way: No more Lizzies, slappin’ on Cash Cobain, get Slizzy /Fam, are you dizzy? Don’t try diss me.” DR

Coucou Chloe — Guess

We aren’t guessing the colour of anyone’s underwear here, sadly, but that doesn’t mean this latest tune from French musician Coucou Chloe wouldn’t fit nicely into Charli xcx’s Brat universe. The raunchy, club-ready banger is practically dripping with sweat, as Chloe repeatedly says he’s a bitch” over an appropriately heavy bassline. Guess, with all its threatening-but-also-inviting aura, packs plenty of dancefloor heat. JW
