Victory Lap’s documentary unites the UK’s DIY rap scene

Grab your popcorn.

On Sunday night, Victory Lap packed out East London’s Genesis Cinema for the premiere of Training Mode Volume.1 – an hour-long film that’s packed with raw freestyles filmed on the streets and in crammed studios across London.

Training Mode Volume.1 is clearly inspired by the legendary Risky Roadz grime DVDs. It’s also proof that, right now, the scene is stylistically diverse and full of characters.

The doc sees grime’s OG Novelist spit sturdy bars, while YT gargles his hooks with AutoTune. Kibo – who’s frequently crowned as the MVP of Victory Lap’s cyphers – goes back-to-back with the shadowy hedonist Jawnino. Sinn6r mixes goth with drill, while Norwich-raised newcomer Ledbyher reveals her artist name is inspired by William Wordsworth. Victory Lap’s in-house funny guy Niko B goes as far as to freestyle over Supergrass’s cheeky Britpop anthem Alright and, somehow, it works.

Stay tuned for Training Mode Volume.1s online release.
