Yung Lean hosts a cheerful funeral for himself in the Yung Forever video

Also on the Rated by THE FACE playlist: Nemzzz, DJ Python, Tate McRae and Smerz.

There’s loads of music out there, and sometimes it’s hard to keep up.

Rather than letting the algorithm dictate your music taste, you can listen to Rated by THE FACE – a playlist that’s lovingly curated and updated by our (human) editorial team every week.

Tate McRae – Revolving Door

Tate McRae’s eagerly anticipated album So Close to What is here, and despite the fact that the Canadian singer is only 21, it’s a decidedly grown-up affair that’s full of sultry pop bangers like the TikTok hit Sports Car. On Revolving Door, the latest single to drop from the album, Tate sings about a toxic relationship that she keeps coming back to, like a revolving door (duh). How’d I get from your gym to your couch?” she asks over a muffled dance beat. If her last few releases are anything to go by, it’s an earworm in the making. TL

DJ Python – Besos Robados ft. Isabella Lovestory

DJ Python knows how to lock his listeners into a trance. Besos Robados, the lead track from his forthcoming EP I Was Put on This Earth, builds a slinky groove with pulsating percussion, warm organs and breathy raps from Honduran vocalist Isabella Lovestory, another cutting-edge artist who’s experimenting with Latin genres. Dim the lights and give in to the hypnotism. DR

Smerz – A thousand lies

For a while now, Norwegian duo Smerz have been releasing music via their own label Shopping Records, and seemingly doing whatever the hell they want. Last year they dropped Allina, an EP of raw electroclash tracks telling the story of a fictitious popstar (the concept was cooked up with the All-In fashion brand), as well as a reverb-drenched cover of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and the shimmering house-pop track Shining Star. On the tranquil ballad A thousand lies, they take a breather to contemplate the complexities of companionship. It’s paired with lo-fi footage of their NYE road trip, during which they appear to have gatecrashed a disco full of people wearing plastic cowboy hats. Freedom. DR

Nemzzz – Cold

Numbers aren’t everything. Sometimes good music doesn’t get the attention it deserves, and there’s always a lot of crap in the charts. That said, it’s hard not to be impressed by Nemzzz’s stats. The 20-year-old Mancunian started gaining momentum in 2022 and last year he was reportedly the third most streamed UK rapper after Dave and Central Cee. On Cold, the opening track on his forthcoming second mixtape Rent’s Due, Nemzzz reflects on his misadventures before all the success, back when his cheap necklaces turned his neck green. He no longer has that problem. DR

Yung Lean – Forever Yung

On the lead single off Yung Lean’s freshly announced eighth album, Jonatan, the cult Swedish star sets an optimistic tone. Cause you see me up, and you see me down /And you see me rise and come up again /Don’t have to watch the world in flames /The mask will break, but not your name,” Lean sings over handclaps and a plodding bassline. The resilient lyrics stand in stark contrast to the Aidan Zamiri-directed music video, in which Lean hosts his own funeral. But then again, Yung Lean has always toed the line between playfulness and sincerity. JW

Finn Foxell – Snatch

In the year 2000, Guy Ritchie released his cult-classic British gangster film Snatch featuring Jason Statham acting hard and Brad Pitt doing a dodgy London accent. This week, Finn Foxell dropped his tribute to the movie in the form of a catchy, swaggering track alongside a video directed by Kris Sharda in his home turf of West London. Featuring cinematic walkthroughs of Shepherds Bush market, pints in the local boozer and a scrap in the local park, we almost prefer it to Richie’s. TL

Ezra Collective – Body Language ft. Sasha Keable

London jazz group Ezra Collective always bring the energy. Body Language, a Latin American-influenced tune featuring Colombian South Londoner Sasha Keable, is a much-needed antidote to the gloom that has been plaguing UK skies for a minute now. JW
