Just in the nick of time for summer, FILA has unveiled the latest in a string of collaborative collections to honour its 110th anniversary. This time the sportswear giant has teamed up with fellow Italian fashion purveyor, Massimo Giorgetti of MSGM.
The MSGM x FILA capsule is partly inspired by Lea Pericoli, the 1960s tennis player famed for her frou-frou, on-court fits. Giorgetti also tapped the extensive FILA archives for source material. “FILA, for me, is the tennis court… I wanted to give a romantic interpretation of it, echoing a cinematic world,” he explains. “I was surprised by how much they have done over the decades. I just had to remix and update it.”
The resultant collection, complete with halter neck tops, mini skirts, shorts, polo shirts, and T‑shirts, evidences a pastiche pooling of motifs. The joyful colour palette, the cheeky recurring slogan “YOU ARE MY MATCH POINT”, ruffle-trimmed Lady Di bib collar, and heart cutout details all point to the playful input of Giorgetti. The more practical design features, such as the classic sports cuts, knitted collars and spandex-blended fabrics, derive from the original performance wear pieces that helped to position FILA as the powerhouse it is today.
Tennis stars Kristýna Plíšková, Sofia Kenin, Reilly Opelka, and Diego Schwartzman all shed their traditional tennis whites this week, in favour of tie-dye-dappled pieces from the collection, as they took to the courts to compete at Roland Garros, the French tournament constituting the second leg of the Grand Slam circuit.
And in the photographs here, see in a leafy park, you’ll see London cool-kids Kasper, Mya and Sam are serving looks (not tennis balls *ahem*) from the new collection that’s in line with the youthful spirit of both brands. Straddling both leisure and sport, the capsule is set to fulfil all your post-lockdown outfit needs. Summer wardrobe? Game, set, match.
