Cortisa Star raps ferociously on Dramatic

Also on the Rated by The Face playlist: Turnstile, Sherelle, Sorry and Deela.

There’s loads of music out there, and sometimes it’s hard to keep up.

Rather than letting the algorithm dictate your music taste, you can listen to Rated by THE FACE – a playlist that’s lovingly curated and updated by our (human) editorial team every week.

Turnstile – Never Enough

Turnstile’s 2021 album Glow On is probably one of the best albums of the decade so far. It feels as though the Baltimore hardcore punk band (or, can we get away with calling them pop-punk?) have toured the world 10 times in the last four years, which is admirable considering how much energy they expel on stage. But it’s been a bit painful to wait so long for Glow Ons follow-up. Turnstile’s comeback single Never Enough certainly has the feel of a big event. Euphoric organs are blown away with a massive guitar drop, the chorus could fill an arena and the stunning video looks like it cost millions. Time to get back on the road guys. DR

Sorry – Jetplane

On Jetplane, Sorry tumble down a scuzzy, guitar-laden, in-your-face rabbit hole. Sampling Guided by Voices’ 1994 track Hot Freaks, frontwoman Asha Lorenz sings flippantly about, well, hot freaks: the kind of people who bury their head in the sand and prefer to party over facing real life. There’s also an Arctic Monkey’s flavour to Jetplane, both in mood and lyrics. It’s an interesting new direction for Sorry, and it bodes well for the London band’s long-awaited third album. JW

Deela x Vayda – Heater

Nigerian-British rapper Deela links up with husky-voiced Atlanta artist Vayda for a sultry, dancehall banger on Heater. I’m feeling hot tonight /I just want to get turnt tonight /never lose me if you’re acting right,” they rap in a catchy back-and-forth hook that evokes lip gloss, sun screen and summer. TL

Kwn – Do What I Say

It’s been a big couple of years for London artist Kwn (pronounced kay-one). She’s racked up tens of millions of streams and has formed a close relationship with Kehlani, carving out a reputation for her sensual melodies. Kwn has been teasing R&B track Do What I Say for a minute now, much to the dismay of her thirsty fans. Fortunately, they won’t be disappointed with the raunchiness of the full song. JW

Sherelle – Just My Type (Freaky) ft. George Riley

Sherelle is renowned for the positive energy in her DJ sets. On this single from her debut album Like a Vengeance, London singer George Riley – who’s previously cooked up leftfeild dancepop bangers with Hudson Mohawke and Anz – smoothly glides over her close friend’s explosive jungle breaks and sun-kissed synths. The dream-like video depicts a utopian club night, and Sherelle has proposed that we make this track the tune of the summer.” Run it up. DR

Cortisa Star – Dramatic

Cortisa Star keeps going viral. At the end of 2024, the 19-year-old Baltimore-based rapper won legions of admirers (and haters) with her boyfriend-snatching anthem Fun. Then in March this year she turned heads on the catwalk for Miu Miu at Paris Fashion Week. Her debut EP E.M.O. (Evil Motion Overload) is a wild onslaught of rage rap, hyperpop and speaker-blowing club beats. Her fearless, ferocious bars which are corrupted distortion and AutoTune, and on Dramatic, Cortisa spits viciously over a synthesised heavy metal guitar loop that would surely open the pit at Rolling Loud. This year’s most uncompromising breakout act. DR
