Jamie xx DJed 10 nights in a row at an intimate London club

Missed it? Live vicariously through these euphoric, sweat-soaked pics from The Floor.

Feeling a bit knackered after the bank holiday weekend? Spare a thought for Jamie xx, who’s just done 10 back-to-back nights in the club. From Sunday 16th to Saturday 25th May, Jamie hosted his residency The Floor at the 300-capacity Venue MOT club in South East London, playing until the early hours at every event. You can’t knock the effort.

Guests at The Floor included Jamie’s The xx bandmate Romy, Nick León, DJ Python, queer party collective Chapter 10, art-pop duo Jockstrap, Hackney poet-rapper John Glacier, plus THE FACE cover star Charli XCX and her fiancé/new DJ partner George Daniel. For the residency, Jamie even lowered the venue’s ceiling and installed his own bespoke sound system. His dedication to The Floor is presumably thanks to the fact that Jamie’s first solo album since 2015’s In Colour is promised to drop later this year. It’s never too early to build up hype, eh?

Favourite memories from The Floor?

It’s all a massive blur, I can’t really remember anything about it. But now that it’s over I’m sure it’s going to come to me in the week and I’ll be very emotional.

Why Venue MOT?

It’s one of the last places in London that feels genuinely free and DIY. The guy who owns it is a legend and they let me build my own space inside.

Venue MOT is very intimate. What’s the smallest club you’ve ever been in?

There was a club I played in Tokyo in, like, 2010 that was tiny. You could fit max 50 people in there but the sound system was huge. It was great.

What was important to you when picking the guests for The Floor?

It was really important to me that every night the line-up was eclectic enough for me to adapt and play differently, and for the energy in the club to feel totally different each day so that it was a challenge.

Anything you can share about the new album?

I’ve played every track off the album during the residency, so people have now heard the album in some way.

Have you ever been kicked out of a club or pub?

I don’t think so!
