Playboi Carti corrupts an Ashanti sample on Cocaine Nose

Also on the Rated by The Face playlist: Florence Sinclair, Tommy Gold, Chappell Roan and Nikki Nair and DJ ADHD.

There’s loads of music out there, and sometimes it’s hard to keep up.

Rather than letting the algorithm dictate your music taste, you can listen to Rated by THE FACE – a playlist that’s lovingly curated and updated by our (human) editorial team every week.

Playboi Carti – Cocaine Nose

There are 30 tracks on Playboi Carti’s much-hyped new album Music. Some of them are brilliant, some of them are a mess. Cocaine Nose falls into the former category. I watched footage of Carti premiering this one at Rolling Loud Miami back in December and I’ve been looking forward to the official release ever since, so I can hear that moshpit opening guitar riff in all its glory. Turns out the guitar is sampled from Ashanti’s 2004 track Only U. Trust Carti to regurgitate an RnB banger and make it sound evil as hell. DR

Florence Sinclair – Bandz

Shadowy rapper/producer Florence Sinclair has been quietly building a following on the UK’s experimental scene for a few years now, collaborating with the likes of Space Afrika and Klein and remixing Sega Bodega. On new single Bandz, which marks their signing to XL Recordings, Florence raps over a dark dembow beat, chanting chicken bone/chicken bone” in the chorus like it’s an incantation and reflecting that all my life, they treat me like I’m strange”. With a headline show at the ICA come May and a slot at Primavera in June, it seems more people are about to find out about this mysterious artist. TL

Nikki Nair & DJ ADHD – Uhhh!

Nikki Nair and DJ ADHD are at it again. Having previously joined forces for two EPs – 2022’s Golden Monkey and last year’s Where U Find This – the transatlantic duo are delivering more in-your-face, cheeky club bangers via their new label Scrap, which they’ve sardonically described as a Global E‑Waste Exchange.” Uhhh! is built with pounding beat and pulverising bass, and it’s decorated with bleeps, squeaks and titular grunts. In an era when inoffensive electronic music is rewarded by inclusions on background playlists on streaming services, it’s strangely reassuring that someone out there is making tunes which would stress out your parents. Tommy Gold – Part of Me

These bright Spring days are really getting me hyped for summer parties. It’s only Tuesday, but as I look out my desk at that cloudless blue sky, I’m half tempted to nip to the shop and buy some tinnies to sip at my desk. It probably helps that I’ve been listening to Tommy Gold’s glistening house track Part of Me, which transports you back to those blissfully carefree moments of afternoon raving. Time to book some annual leave. DR

Chappell Roan – The Giver

It’s giving gay country! On her unapologetically horny new single, former FACE cover star Chappell Roan tries on different personas. There’s a lawyer, a dentist, a plumber, a construction worker and a detective. Different professions, same goal: to satisfy in bed (So take it like a taker Cause, baby, I’m a giver/Ain’t no need to hurry/’Cause, baby, I deliver/Ain’t no country boy quitter/I get the job done”, she sings. Oo-er). The Giver sees Chappell pay homage to a genre she listened to growing up, but writing on her Insta, she’s insisted it’s not that deep: I am just here to twirl and do a little gay yodel for yall.” JW
