“There is only one BLUMITSU”. So says a disembodied voice, on loop, from the speakers at Platform 23, a train-themed stage nestled in the corner of Glastonbury’s Shangri-La area, before erupting into pulverising electro. Two people stand behind the decks in hazmat suits and sunglasses, but they operate as a single entity: BLUMITSU. Created by DJ/producers Bluetoof and Jossy Mitsu, it’s a creative partnership that draws from science fiction, actual science and a shared obsession with high-octane club music.
“We call it the BLUMITSU brain,” Bluetoof says, calling in from an Airbnb in Milan, having just landed there after a trip to Switzerland. “We want the whole thing to be an experience – we make a custom intro for every single set we do. We give out masks. We try to build a new environment. We like spinning people out and we’re drama queens.”
“Musical theatre vibes, to be honest,” Jossy adds from her flat in London.
It seems the pair were destined to join forces. They first connected back in 2019, when Bluetoof sent Jossy, then a well-established selector who was part of the 6 Figure Gang crew, a tune he’d produced while at university. She played it on her Rinse FM show – a big deal for any amateur DJ – which convinced Bluetoof to give the whole thing a proper go. He moved to London a week later. “And randomly, I moved into Jossy’s old flat!” he says. “She’d only just left as well – it was a complete coincidence.”
“We’d never even met,” Jossy continues, “but [after Rinse] we were basically internet friends through music.” Soon enough, Bluetoof earned his own Rinse show, and as fate would have it, he was scheduled to play straight after Jossy on Wednesdays. They experimented with some b2b sets before deciding, on a night out (where all good decisions are made) to get in the studio together.
Since 2022, BLUMITSU have steadily sustained a buzz with global tour dates and a string of singles, including their new bass-heavy, slightly menacing track Blueprint. “We play to each other’s strengths,” Bluetoof says. “I’m super creative and Jossy is a logistics mastermind. We’re interested in Afrofuturism and Arabfuturism, because I’m Moroccan and Jossy is Ghanaian. I say loads of things and never get them done. Jossy grabs ideas and makes them happen.” At one point, she worked in a lab as an actual scientist. Perhaps this goes some way to explaining why the duo have been handing out a blue potion after their sets – it’s known as The Formula, also the title of the Drexcyian anthem they dropped last summer.
So what does it taste like? “The Formula affects everyone differently,” Bluetoof says gravely. “One guy we tested it on went crazy.” On that note…
