The Face Mix 009: Joe Armon-Jones

From Weather Report to Wiley, here’s a tour of the renowned London jazz artist’s home vinyl collection.

The London jazz lot keep themselves busy. Alongside playing in the band Ezra Collective, Joe Armon-Jones’ has a flourishing solo career. Last Friday, the keyboard player dropped his second solo LP Turn to Clear View, which features prominent musicians from the scene like saxophonist Nubya Garcia, drummer Moses Boyd and guitarist Oscar Jerome. And if you’ve been following the wave at all, chances are you’ve heard Joe Armon-Jones’ lively, silky keys dance all over someone else’s record a number of times.

For his Face Mix, Armon-Jones dug into his crates at home to mix funk, dub, hip-hop and grime. The mix is in the player above, see the tracklist – and what Armon-Jones has to say about it – below.

What’s the vibe and direction of your Face mix?

This mix is strictly from my vinyl collection, so it takes you through the bulk of what I listen to when I’m at home, from Weather Report to Wiley.

If you could bring any closed-down venue back from the dead, which one would it be?

That’s a good question and a hard one to answer. Either Total Refreshment Centre or Ghost Notes, both of which I reference on the Turn to Clear View album cover if you look carefully enough.

What are your hopes and fears for London’s music scene?

Hopes: that it continues to grow and prosper.

Fears: that people will start to see it as a closed scene. It’s not, it’s completely open to everybody, and in that way it isn’t really a scene at all, it’s just a group of musicians.

Who would you most like to see on the cover of The Face?

Either Rago Foot or Shy One.

Any underground/upcoming jazz musicians on the London scene we should keep our eye out for?

Loads and loads. Too many to name all here but keep an eye out for Ife Ogunjobi, Sahra Gure, Sam Barrel Jones, Morgan Simpson, Oliver Palfreyman and George Riley.
