Listen to this power-half-hour mix from Tiffany Calver
The UK’s most credible rap selector is bringing back her Tiffany & Friends party series this weekend. Here are some tunes to get you in the mood.
Over the years, loads of rap DJs have been guilty of just playing the biggest hits of the time on rotation. With Tiffany Calver, you can always trust her to throw in the bangers which need a little more love, along with the big tunes that everyone already knows.
The 24-year-old started out with shows on NTS, Radar and Kiss FM before landing her role as the host of the BBC 1Xtra rap show (a slot previously held by Charlie Sloth, and Tim Westwood before him) in 2019. Drake’s team clocked that Calver’s got her ear to the ground a while ago – she did a show on OVO’s Beats1 show after his manager Oliver El-Khatib caught her DJ set at party in Berlin, and she was appointed the job of bringing out local rappers on arena stages for the European leg of Drizzy’s Assassination Vacation tour.
This Friday (31st January), Calver’s bringing back her Tiffany & Friends party series. The event is sold out, but it’s worth keeping an eye on Instagram if you’re curious about which friends might show up and perform. Check out Tiffany Calver’s Face Mix and read our Q&A below.
What’s the vibe and direction of your Face Mix?
A bit like the majority of my sets, there’s never a direction. I’m not an organised person. I’m maybe the most unorganised Virgo on the planet. I only ever decide on the first song. I like to know where I’m beginning and then I take it from there. This mix is a timestamp of where my mind was at on the day I made it I guess. Mixes shouldn’t be about “crowd-pleasing” ever – my favourites are the ones where I know none of the songs and I get to learn more about music and the DJ. Hopefully you discover something in this one.
What makes you feel good when you’re DJing in the club?
A responsive dance floor. I definitely feed off of the energy in the room and it dictates how and what I play.
If you could bring one closed-down venue back from the dead, which one would it be?
You know how people say they miss the old Kanye? I miss the old Visions (Dalston) a lot!!
Who do you think should be on the cover of The Face?
Mowalola. She is hands down the most genuine artist I’ve met. The fire and the passion she puts into her work, it’s truly her. I don’t know how else to explain it. She’s been the same Mowalola since we were teenagers and it’s really nice to watch her be celebrated for just being herself. A fucking firestarter.
