You might think Valentine’s Day isn’t really your thing. Maybe you reckon it’s a capitalist construct that was created to brainwash the masses into buying chocolates and soppy cards. But the truth is, if you’re lucky enough to have a significant other willing to put up with you, they’ll definitely be expecting some extra appreciation on 14th Feb, which is fair enough.
So, fine, Valentine’s Day is a bit cheesy, but it’s got to be done. THE FACE has helpfully curated this playlist to set the mood for your evening, featuring selections from cool musicians, artists and fashion people. Press play, get your apron on and open a bottle of wine – and none of the cheap stuff, please.
Keith Sweat – I’ll Give All My Love to You
“It’s sexual, it’s what I make love to. It’s slizzy” – Cash Cobain, sexy drill pioneer
Outkast – Prototype
“This song perfectly encapsulates the blissful yet nostalgic feeling of falling in love again. So good it hurts. R u the one or just the prototype? </3″ – Isabella Lovestory, reggaeton experimentalist
Madonna – Justify My Love
“It’s an intensely seductive classic and very appropriate if you’re feeling lustful this Vally day. I’m a big supporter of desire and impassioned yearning – nonchalance and indifference are overrated” – Georgia Moot, model and presenter
Little Annie – I Think Of You
“When you have a big crush or are in love, even daily chores can be an erotic affair with [your mind constantly] filled with thoughts of them. The habitual nature of these lyrics never fail to charm me. And it’s possibly the only love song in the world that mentions Argos” – Ella Lucia, stylist
The Ramones – Baby, I Love You
“This is what falling in love feels like. The ooey-gooey strings. The pain and soul in Joey Ramone’s voice. The need and desperation of it all – Tell me that you feel the same!” – Snake Denton, THE FACE’s roving reporter
Boule Noire – Kiki d’Hollywood
“This is a song I’d have playing on repeat when I’m getting ready for a date, wet head of hair, cigarette balanced precipitously on the edge of my vanity, dancing around my apartment figuring out what to wear. It would also still be in the record player when I take my date home later that night, ice cubes rattling in a highball, kissing in my living room” – Sofie Royer, vintage pop virtuoso
Lorraine Ellison – Stay With Me (Baby)
“This speaks to the flipside of Valentine’s, when things don’t necessarily work out. Here Lorraine has given everything, only to get broken up with in return, pleading, begging not to be left on her own. The chorus erupts at such towering emotional peaks, you just want to rip your heart out of your chest” – Elias Rønnenfelt, Danish punk crooner
The Beatles – I Will
“I’ve loved this romantic song since I was a teenager. I know how to sing it and play it on the guitar” – Blaketheman1000, NYC rapper/funny guy
Fiona Apple – The First Taste
“From her debut album in 1996. Thinking about the idea of holding back and savouring the anticipation of something for the first time…” – Isabella Burley, founder of Climax
Cub Sport – Drive
“This is my best friend’s band and their relationship makes me believe in true love. This is one of my favourite songs of theirs <3″ – Mallrat, Aussie singer-songwriter
Ivy – Be My Baby
“I remember putting this song in the first playlist I made for my boyfriend after our first date. I hoped he’d get the memo from the lyrics. He did” – Anna Jonska, video director
The Femcels – He Needs Me
“I chose the song because it’s all about delusion. And Valentine’s Day is the anniversary of delusion” – Babymorocco, club-pop provocateur
Famous – The Beatles
“If a recent heartbreak has left you screaming into the void this Valentine’s Day, all hope is not lost. Here’s something to scream along to” Lea Ogunlami, presenter
Tyler Cole – Same Language
“Same language is my favourite song by my boyfriend ❤️ When I’m travelling (always too much for work) I listen to it sometimes so I can hear his voice. Fun fact: I sing harmonies at the end of it :)” – Raveena, R&B musician
Burial – Hiders
“Of all the Burial tunes, this one still gives me such a euphoric release when the drums kick in; I want it to last forever, like how love should feel” – Jason Stewart aka DJ Themjeans, How Long Gone
HorsegirrL – bby luv x3 ft. DJ G2G
“bby luv x3 is a song I wrote with a good friend of mine, DJ G2G. It’s a hardstyle track with soft sweet tender lyrics about being lovesick, perfect for Valentine’s Day. Good to listen to both on a romantic date and a romantic night in the club” – HorsegirrL, equinely DJ
fakemink – Mink
“I was at Steph Metal’s the other night and we just ran through the whole [Fakemink] discography and this song set it off nicely. All praise due to Mowalola for showing me this one at Taiba’s house party that night. Special dedication to my good friend Impey too” – James Massiah, renowned poet and party boy
Yailin La Mas Viral – Bing Bong
“Self-explanatory, soy la perra de tu mario que te lo tiene fundio all year around but specially the 14th of February” – Mina Galán, Club Stamina boss
Nelly Furtado – Showtime
“I was 16 when Nelly’s 2006 album Loose was released. It’s filled with songs that remind me of so many firsts. This specific one made me feel weightless and honestly excited about falling in love – something which, at the time, I hadn’t done yet” – Nellie Eden, beauty specialist
Tate McRae – messier
“Love is messy. I wouldn’t know because I’ve never been in love, but this song makes me feel like I’m a heartbroken diva at the epicenter of a tumultuous relationship. Isn’t that what we all need on Valentine’s Day?” – Jake Shane, TikTok comedy legend
Banks – Warm Water
“I think it captures the tenderness of meeting someone you like for the first time. A crush that’s not yet been fully explored but you fantasise about what it could be :)” – Jjess, East London DJ
PARTYNEXTDOOR – Resentment
“I love PARTYNEXTDOOR. It’s great sex music. I had a crazy acid trip New Year’s Eve/Day and Resentment was playing as I went to another dimension. It feels cozy to me” – Martine Syms, artist
Elmiene – Someday
“UK talent Elmiene has had an amazing year, and this track is just one of the many reasons why UK R&B is making a big comeback. His talent is undeniable, and he’s really putting the UK on the map. It’s exciting to see him grow, and we couldn’t be prouder to call him our own” – Ty Hinds, Slow Jams With AAA
Mahalia – Pressure Points ft. Lila Ike
“A mix of pain and pleasure. Pressure Points is the type of romance that I’m obsessed with, personally. It’s sexy and smooth but has just enough attitude to keep your valentine on their toes!” – Mahalia, UK R&B singer
Craig David – 7 Days
“Happy Valentine’s, Galentine’s, Malentine’s Day. This song is a beautiful poetic journey that follows the first initial meetings of crushes , speaking highly of them, and finally being with them. Craig praises the women he’s fallen for, and we love positivity” – Sienna King, actor
Sade – Your Love is King
“You’re making me dance inside – this lyric makes me think of loads of pink butterflies dancing around in my belly. It’s my favourite love song, and I could listen to it over and over again” – Isabella Weatherby, founder of Peachy Den
