Rated by The Face: a weekly playlist
Pa Salieu’s back with a banger, Davido has a message for the haters and Avalon Emerson releases a synth-pop cover that will catch you by surprise.
We’re in a crisis, but great music keeps coming out.
To keep up with it all, check out this playlist which we lovingly update every week. Read about last week’s additions here.
Pa Salieu – My Family ft. BackRoad Gee
He’s done it again. Back in May, Pa Salieu dropped Bang Out and Betty – a one-two punch that proved him to be one of this year’s best breakthrough artists in the UK rap scene. My Family is just as good.
Davido – FEM
The new single from Davido might sound pleasingly sweet, but as the Nigerian star explained on Instagram, there’s a spiky message for the haters in there: “To the people talking about you because they don’t understand your shine, they don’t understand your grace, they don’t understand why they can never be what you are or have what you have, we say FEM.”
Avalon Emerson – Long-Forgotten Fairytale
This one might catch you by surprise. Avalon Emerson is well known in the club world as a techno DJ, but the lead track from her forthcoming DJ-Kicks mix is a synth-pop cover of Boston indie rockers, The Magnetic Fields.
Eartheater – Volcano
Eartheater’s last LP Trinity took on a glacial trap sound, and the one before that – 2018’s Irisiri – clashed elements of classical music with abrasive electronics. Her new album Phoenix: Flames Are Dew Upon My Skin is out on 2nd October, and like recently-released tracks How To Fight and Below The Clavicle, Volcano proves there’s a traditionally great songwriter behind the dense concepts.
M1llionz – Lagga
Brummie driller M1llionz continues his winning streak with his sixth single of 2020.
